This only works with Windows as the Controller Service linked is build for Windows systems. In case you wonder, if this would work with custom drivers like sc-controller on SteamOS, I had no luck. I tried every existing custom drivers available.

Steam detects the xbox 360 layout that is selected in that program and also cause Steam supports that controller, but when booting the game it boots with keyboard and mouse layout cause of the trackpads of the Steam controller and refuses to use the xbox controller ...
can't get steam deck controller to work
Jan 3, 2024 · Have you tryed leaving steam open; running in background, and configuring Steam Desktop Controller Layout. The default Deck config is designed for Desktop, and holding Start button switches to Gamepad input. I'm guessing you have all the windows drivers installed. :killdozer: I guess I haven't tried this.

Oct 2, 2024 · I use my steam deck oled to remote play from windows pc. The game starts but the steam deck controller isnt working in start menu or ingame. I always have to quit via touchscreen. I have no solution yet to fix this. I tried switch layouts, switch proton etc. Any suggestions?

Jul 2, 2024 · I booted into the WIndows Parition of my Steam Deck since I dual boot and Steam for Windows recognized the Steam Deck controller just fine. It showed up in Steam and the Steam / Quick Access button worked just fine. So this is deff not a hardware issue (at least for me) and is something on the Linux/Valve update side.
