Jul 24, 2015 · The Rudabanya mining district is a rich area, though primarily known for base metals and silver mining. In the 1700s, mining activity increased dramatically in Hungary, but it was “black gold”, or coal, that was of high interest.
The mining of clays for the ceramic industry (bricks and tiles) shows a relatively uniform spatial pat ern. The larg-est clay pits are along the Danube (Bugyi and Dunavarsány), in the north (Görömböly and Tiszavasvári), and in Transdanubia (Várvölgy-Uzsa and Devecser).

The Bakony and Vertes mountains contain 10 to 12 percent of the world's known bauxite reserves and deposits of manganese ore, the only alloy necessary for steel production found in Hungary. The only iron-ore mine, located at Rudabanya, produces ankerite and siderite that contain only 24 to 27 percent iron and require lime before smelting.
