In 2019, Mattel released a Barbie in a wheelchair and a Barbie with a prosthetic limb. Other dolls in the Fashionistas line include a Barbie with Down syndrome, a Barbie with hearing aids, a bald Barbie, a Barbie with a skin condition and Barbies with different hair types and body shapes.
Mattel has made strides over the years to come up with Barbies who represent women from all walks of life. Barbie with diabetes is part of the Barbie Fashionista line, which features 175 dolls, including one that is blind, one with Down syndrome, and one that is hearing impaired.
The first-ever Barbie with Type 1 diabetes comes with an insulin pump and glucose monitor. Both kids and adults with diabetes are celebrating the announcement and say they are grateful for a doll that represents them.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body’s defense system attacks its own insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The result is dangerously high blood sugar that, if not controlled, can lead to severe complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, and blindness.
