Marshall backed out of the game because so many players entered the transfer portal after coach Charles Huff's departure.

Marshall football went 10–3 during the 2024 football season, finishing the season with seven consecutive wins culminating in a 31–3 win over Louisiana in the Sun Belt championship. The Thundering Herd were set to celebrate that successful season with a trip to the Independence Bowl to take on Army.

Opting out of the Independence Bowl last month will not come without consequence for Marshall. The Sun Belt Conference announced Friday it was issuing a $100,000 institutional fine to Marshall for deciding to not face Army in what had been a postseason matchup scheduled for December 28 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
