A teenager, Learnen Tien, came to Melbourne with a 0-3 score at Majors. The 19-year-old American qualified for the Australian Open main draw and scored two five-setter wins. Learnen faced world no. 5 and last year's finalist Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

At the age of 19, Learner Tien defeated Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller that finished just before 3 a.m. in Melbourne.
