World No. 1 Jannik Sinner beat No. 2 Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 on Sunday to win the Australian Open for the second straight year. Sinner is the first Italian to win three Grand Slams, as he also won the 2024 US Open.
In total, Sinner has won 36 of his last 37 matches, his only defeat coming against Carlos Alcaraz in the final of October’s China Open.
Zverev got his spot in the Australian Open final — play is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. local time (3:30 a.m. EST) on Sunday — when 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic stopped playing because of a leg injury just one set into their semifinal on Friday.
And just as Djokovic had a couple of hurdles by the names of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to deal with, Sinner is not alone among the newest generation of tennis stars. His top rival at this point is Carlos Alcaraz, who has four Slam victories at age 21 — and won all three matches he played against Sinner in 2024.
Italian Jannik Sinner on Sunday won a second straight Australian Open, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3, over Germany’s Alexander Zverev. The 23-year-old dropped only two sets during the year’s first major tournament and earned $2.
Sinner, 23, now has as many major titles as Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka. He also became the first Italian man to win three majors. He improved to 17-3 against To 10 opponents.
Alexander Zverev says he is feeling down and emotional after once again coming within one win of earning his first Grand Slam title.
Facing Sinner reminded Alexander Zverev of trying to solve the challenge presented by the 24-time major champion Djokovic.
Among them: the Italian has now won his last 10 matches in a row against Top 10 players in straight sets, the first man to do that since ATP rankings began in 1973.
