Marianne Faithfull, whose 1960s turn as a swinging London pop star was succeeded by a striking punk-era artistic rebirth, died Thursday. She was 78.

In her later years, Faithfull became a fashion crowd darling, knocking around New York with Karl Lagerfeld, performing at Chloé events and dressing for the stage in Chanel.
