The offspring of a scarlet tanager and rose-breasted grosbeak—distantly related birds whose evolutionary paths diverged 10 million years ago—was recently found in Pennsylvania.

Female scarlet tanagers that need to hide from predators are the universal female bird, olive backs and yellowish bellies. This is the same color that males take on once the breeding season is done.
