New York City's newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani is many things to many people, but in entertainment circles he is seen as a genuine child of showbiz. His mother, Mira Nair, is an Oscar-nominated writer and director whose credits include Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay.

Mr Mamdani has pledged to expand free child care in New York removing fees for every child in the city aged from six weeks to five years old. New York currently only offers free child care for children aged three and four years, with families paying over $US20,000 (about $A30,000) a year in child care fees.
