The recent AI advances by Chinese upstart DeepSeek could be the beginning of a potential nightmare scenario that Nvidia Corp. Chief Executive Jensen Huang has been worrying about since the chip maker’s meteoric rise.

Jensen Huang likely had an especially bad case of the Mondays when DeepSeek came to town. Of course, as one of the richest people in the world, the co-founder of Nvidia ended up skating away virtually unscathed.

Retail investors bought a record amount of Nvidia stock on Monday after concerns over a low-cost artificial intelligence model from Chinese startup DeepSeek stripped 17% off its shares, or $593 billion from its market value.

Nvidia shares' 9% recovery Tuesday was the second-best day in terms of market cap added for any company ever, trailing only a record it set in July.

CEO Jensen Huang has proven extremely adept at positioning the company for the next big technological breakthrough, as evidenced by its success with AI. While the vast majority of Nvidia's current sales come from outfitting data centers for AI, Huang is already looking to the future.

Chip stocks in the U.S. and Europe rose on Wednesday for a second straight day, recovering from a punishing selloff triggered by China's low-cost DeepSeek artificial intelligence tool at the start of the week.
