Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office improperly blocked public access to a City Hall room where they said they store Gucci bags, designer cufflinks and other gifts, according to an investigation by the city’s Office of the Inspector General.

While attempting an undercover inspection of the mayor's gift room, investigators were denied access to a log of gifts that is supposed to be publicly available.

"These gifts are, by definition, city property; if they are squirreled away and hidden from view, people are only left to assume the worst about how they are being handled," Inspector General Deborah Witzburg said.

The Inspector General's office was denied access to the mayor's gift room with designer bags, cufflinks and shoes. The report calls for the mayor to end a practice where gifts accepted on behalf of the city are only logged at City Hall.
