Defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz was given another tough litmus test by plucky German Jan-Lennard Struff but the second seed battled his way to a 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory and reached the fourth round on Friday.

Struff’s untimely double fault in the second game of the third set gave Alcaraz a chance to re-establish his lead, and the Spaniard never looked back from there.

Alcaraz’s unseeded opponent was ranked 125th in the world and was competing in the Wimbledon third round for the fourth time, having never gone beyond. The Spaniard ensured the wait continues for the 35-year-old, who was a 2018 Australian Open doubles semi-finalist.
