It is a short walk from the hotel I stayed in and no you do not have to book a tour, can do the falls on your own BUT be aware it is best not to take any food with you, there are many troops of monkeys there who will cheerfully mug you for any goodies you have. The trek down to the bottom of the Falls{directions makers on the walk} is easy going down but hard work coming back but well worth the journey{there are benches to rest on}Hope this helps.
